Keston Church of England Primary School

Music

At Keston CE Primary School, we are MUSICIANS. We believe that music is a powerful and enriching part of our curriculum, helping children to express themselves, connect with others and build a lifelong love of music. Music is taught across the school, and wherever possible, learning is linked to class topics to make experiences meaningful and engaging.

To support and enhance our provision, Keston CE Primary School follows the Kapow Primary Music scheme, which is designed to nurture pupils’ musical identities and foster confidence, curiosity and appreciation for music in all its forms. The scheme enables children to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to become confident performers, composers and listeners.

Our Music curriculum aims to:

  • Develop pupils’ musical confidence and creativity through singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing.
  • Cultivate listening and appraisal skills, helping pupils recognise and understand music from a wide range of genres, cultures, traditions and historical periods.
  • Support progression in musical understanding, including learning how music can be created, structured and notated.
  • Promote inclusive participation, ensuring every child has access to high‑quality musical opportunities.
  • Strengthen transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, creative thinking and presentation—skills that benefit pupils well beyond their musical learning.

At Keston, music-making is at the heart of school life. All children sing regularly in class and during our weekly whole-school Singing Assembly, which fully supports our Values-based Education. These assemblies expose children to a broad repertoire, including traditional hymns, popular songs, harmony pieces, action songs and music from diverse cultures and genres.

We also offer a wide range of musical enrichment opportunities, including:

  • School Choir, open to KS2 pupils, with regular performances at school celebrations and community events including Keston Parish Church.
  • Participation in the Young Voices Choir at the O2 Arena, a highlight of the school year.
    • Peripatetic instrumental lessons taught by experienced BYMT teachers—including highly popular piano lessons.
    • The opportunity to join RockSteady bands, where pupils take on roles such as guitarist, keyboard player, drummer or vocalist.
    • Whole-class instrumental learning:
      • Year 3 learn to play the Recorder
      • Year 5 learn Djembe drumming

Through Kapow and our broader school provision, we aim to inspire children to explore, enjoy and excel in music. Our curriculum ensures that all pupils experience music as a creative, expressive and unifying art form, while building confidence, resilience and pride in their musical achievements.
