Year 1
"The juicier the mistake, the better we learn!"
- Year 1 Pupil
Year 1 is a very exciting year as children move from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage One. We move from self-directed learning to timetabled subjects, teaching the National Curriculum.
Over the year, we cover a range of broad and exciting topics such as toys, explorers, animals, plants and seasonal changes. We learn about different aspects of Christianity and begin to learn about other faiths. We learn about the different countries that make up the United Kingdom and about our local area. We find out about kings and queens, and explorers including Mae Jemison and why they are so significant. We will be producing some fun pieces of art and we will design and make our own sandwiches, puppets and story books.
We continue to teach and learn phonics so that the children know and can use all of the sounds in English to read and write. The children will have a formal phonics assessment in the summer term.
We develop reading through phonics, individual and group reading. Over the year, pupils will write for different purposes and across subjects.
In Maths, we compare numbers, learn how to add and subtract, investigate shapes and learn how to measure. We also explore fractions, money and time.
In Year 1, we go to the farm to meet different animals, play with toys from the Victorian times and may even go to London to see the famous landmarks!
