Design Technology
At Keston CE Primary School, we are DESIGNERS. We believe that Design and Technology is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum, offering all children the opportunity to be creative, resourceful and innovative. Through designing and making, pupils combine practical skills with knowledge and understanding, enabling them to develop ideas and produce purposeful, functional products.
To support this vision, Keston CE Primary School is implementing Kapow Primary’s Design and Technology scheme of work. This curriculum inspires pupils to think like designers and engineers. It encourages curiosity about how products are created and develops pupils’ confidence to identify real problems, generate ideas, plan, make and evaluate their work.
Our Design and Technology curriculum aims to:
- Develop creativity and innovation by enabling pupils to design, make and refine products that solve real and relevant problems.
- Build confidence in the design process, encouraging children to experiment, adapt and improve their ideas through thoughtful evaluation.
- Promote critical thinking, helping pupils reflect on their products, learn from mistakes and apply these lessons to future projects.
- Foster an understanding of the designed world, raising awareness of how design and technology influence the way we live, work and interact with our environment.
- Encourage resourcefulness, enterprise and resilience, equipping pupils with the skills to contribute positively to the world around them.
- Develop a secure progression of practical skills, ensuring children build on prior learning as they move through the school.
- Support cross‑curricular learning, enabling pupils to apply knowledge from subjects such as Maths, Science and Art in meaningful, practical contexts.
- Strengthen teachers’ subject knowledge and confidence, ensuring high‑quality, engaging and well‑informed lessons for all children.
- Ensure an inclusive and ambitious curriculum, so that every child can participate fully and achieve their potential.
-
Through this approach, Keston CE Primary School empowers pupils to become confident young designers who can imagine, create and evaluate products that improve the world around them.
